Peripheral Notes
Kick-Ass panel #kickass

*still rough

Creation of the film (screenplay) and comic came about simultaneously.

Mark and Vaughn hooked up through mutual friend after Thor fell apart. Collaboration came about with out agents. Vaughn asking Mark for Kick-Ass issues as he wrote them. All the studios passed.

Vaughn wanted to make a post modern superhero film. Other SH films felt interchangeable to him. Decided to do something “independent and different”.

“In my defense, there are no 11 year old stunt girls so we had to do it.” - Vaughn on Chloe

Movie diverging from the Comic:

The episodic nature & structure of the comic didn’t mesh with what the structure of the movie needed to be. Faithfulness is good to a point, but you have to do what is best for the movie. Changed/left out some of the twists from the graphic novel to help the movie.

Mark - “What kind of parent allows their kid to be a stunt child?”

Independent experience and connections allowed Vaughn independently raise the financing for Kick-Ass.

Wanted vs Kick-Ass adaptation

1st 58 minutes and the final 10 was the book. Happy with how it turned out, originally not a fan of the script. Lucky to work with two great directors.

“let’s do something that warrants being made outside the system.”

Vaughn put in a little bit of his own money.

getting financing and what was an appropriate budget level? how did you decide that? was securing nic cage a big part of that?

nearly every scene is taken from something we had scene before

Brian Solis Panel #engage from 3/12

*I took these notes with my blackberry notes program. They are a little raw right now, but I will be cleaning them up as I have time. I also need to find the names and twitter names of the 3 guests that joined the panel halfway through.

#engage

Personal brand and brands we represent
Facebook best example “vs.”

Redefining personal communication

Social media among first to invade corporate culture.
The illusion of control. _No longer managing scarcity._ when we
release the info into the world, we lose control. SM is the opp to
speak to them, with them.

We report to people who don’t want/necessarily need transparency.

I was a champion… Now I am championing change. Adapt old to the new.
Learn their language.

“It’s not what you say, it’s what they say that counts.” “Everything
starts with listening and research.” Understand what it takes to be

How do you rise above the noise?
Have to engage with people where they are. Earn their attention, support.
Do something that has measurable action.

At some point you have to stop asking questions and answer them yourself.
We earn the relationships, trust, and reputations we deserve.

Foursquare check ins as personal recommendation, word of mouth.

SM engagement is personal, not brand connection.

SXSW 2010

Arise Tumblr, I have thought up a new way to utilize you.

This year I will be posting all of my panel notes from South by Southwest Film (and maybe some interactive) on this Tumblr. That way I can avoid the problem I had last year when I never transcribed my notes and sent them to people who shared theirs with me (sorry @hiroticks). This might not be the most lofty of goals but it is a start.

internet vs TV news

there is no reason internet news sources, let alone Twitter, should be kicking broadcast news’ ass (Cable news for the sake of argument).

http://www.economist.com/world/mideast-africa/displaystory.cfm?story_id=13856224

TV news outlits grew acustomed to lazyness when their only competition was newspapers, but now that they have a stout competetor they are wilting like a snow cone in the over.

All the resources (monetary and personal) of multinational corporations and established brands and journalists, and you can’t help but get your ass kicked by people below your paygrade?

Give me half the resources of a TV news network and I’ll run them all out of business. Except BBC, can they even go out of business?

hulu vs tv audience

while I do not have access to their reports, numbers, etc. From what I have read, it seems that advertisers and tv/cable networks are mistakenly thinking that the Hulu audience and the TV audience are the same. Yes, it is true the Hulu audience is not worth as much per viewer, but think about who the audience is.

Its hard to draw many conclusions about an audience if you only know that they watch TV. On the otherhand, knowing that someone is consuming TV content via Hulu still tells you a lot about your viewer, I believe.

except he knows they can’t or won’t, so there is no way he will have to fulfill his promise and can then blame the Palestinians when no progress is made.

leading off… another term for beginning

I needed an outlet (as if I needed another outlet) for items that do not necessitate the time required to create a blog post (or would lose their steam by the time it was finished) and are not interesting enough to share with others in the twitter-verse (or may be longer for that matter). Just things that I thought were worth mentioning in passing. Not a journal, just Notes of the Periphery, if you will.

like this.

Last night I had dinner with some friends, new friends (now), and a closer friend the others were not familiar with. My closer friend has become enamored with the tweets of rapper SlimThug (@slimthugga) and was reading them aloud at the table, laughs all around. After a few tweets, the question was posed as to what was the funnier aspect of the apparent comedy, the tweets themselves or the way in which my closer friend was reading them. [Not sure that last sentence was constructed correctly. I note this out of a desire to acknowledge my lack of confidence in the technical construction of my prose to any readers that may or yet exist, and also in the hopes that someone will confirm or correct the sentence. I will likely do this often. Blame it on public schools; I do.] No one was sure. Nevertheless, my close friend has decided to create a blog in which he will post an audio recording of his readings of @slimthugga’s tweets; not all but the best of is my understanding. [What about that semi colon?] With all of these side notes I have just lost my train of thought [obviously this is still not stream of consciousness. Wait, were stream of consciousness books edited? I mean are they actually written that way or just consciously written in that style. Maybe Burrows were, but I would wager most will never tell. And why did I decide to go back and change some of the parenthesis to brackets?]

Anyway, the idea of a @slimthugga’s tweets podcasted should be funny, or at the very least interesting for some post-post-modern essayist to over analyze at some point.

that is all.
